How CreateIt works

CreateIt uses both verbal and visual information to build understanding and support recall. A diagram, symbol, drawing or physical model can make an abstract idea clearer and provide a useful memory cue when students review the topic later.

Practical ways to use CreateIt

Dual coding and graphic organisers: Add pictures, symbols or drawings to written summaries, or organise key ideas in a mind map, chart or diagram. Compressing complex information into a one-page visual can make relationships easier to see and remember.

Sketch notes: Combine handwritten notes with drawings, arrows, symbols and creative lettering. The aim is not artistic perfection; each visual should help explain or connect an idea.

Physical and pictorial models: Create a tangible or visual representation of a concept. For example, a student might build an atom using simple craft materials, make a three-dimensional solar system or act out a process or scenario. This multisensory approach can strengthen understanding.

Mnemonics: Use a word, phrase or rhyme as a memory cue. Mnemonics are particularly useful for remembering lists, sequences and structured information.

How parents can help

Encourage your child to choose a format that suits the subject and then explain their creation to you. Ask what each image, connection or part of the model represents. If they can clearly describe how it relates to the topic, they are doing more than decorating their notes, they are actively building understanding.
